    Tik Tok…BOOM

    March 5, 2020 /

January 10th, 2020 was a Friday. Two days before I had posted my FIRST video to a social media app called Tik Tok. For those who don’t know, Tik Tok is a video-sharing social network where users (primarily adolescents) share short form (15 – 60 second) videos typically lip syncing and dancing to popular music. I had decided to join Tik Tok so that I could reach more adolescents with messages about their health and wellness than I was able to reach on my other social media platforms.  Back to Friday – 1/10/2020. I arrived early to work with an idea for a couple of videos that I wanted to…

Even young kids can learn “5 finger breathing” (and it can help parents calm down, too 😘).

What are your favorite quick tips to help with anxiety?

I REALLY thought I was prepared for today - I was WRONG!

Words of advice from my favorite “doctor” toda Words of advice from my favorite “doctor” today…

Emotions are running high right now - I can’t believe we have 1 day left. One final bedtime goodnight (yes, we still do say prayers every night before bed), one final family dinner (she chose steak, baked potato, and broccoli), one final reminder to take her $hit up to her bedroom 🤣.

And while I KNOW she’ll be back - I’ve done this once before and it’s just different when they come home. Good - but different.

Whew…I will be OK (but I’m not OK right now).

See y’all in a few days 😘

Today’s message is heavy, but essential.

What I want my daughter (and every teenager) to know is that there are people here for you! No problem is too big. You can come back from anything - except death.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and having thoughts of self-harm - PLEASE reach out. To a friend, a family member, a professor or dial 988.

988 is the number for the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (in the US). Crisis counselors are available 24/7 to help.

You are not alone in your struggles.

9 days left before my baby leaves! Today what I w 9 days left before my baby leaves!

Today what I want her to know the importance of getting involved in something OUTSIDE of her studies.

Of course she’s there to learn - but so many life lessons take place OUTSIDE of the classroom. Building friendships, learning to be a good leader and a good follower, learning to navigate difficult interactions. All of these lessons really are best taught through experience - so I want her to get involved with whatever clubs/organizations/sports/etc. that she’s passionate about.

Now I’m off to enjoy some time with my girl 🥰

I did an interview recently and was asked why I ch I did an interview recently and was asked why I chose Pediatrics - my answer was “Because I absolutely LOVE kids.”

Pretty sure if I wasn’t a Pediatrician I would have been a Pre-K teacher (because I might like 3 & 4 year olds the best).

Give me a ❤️ if you love kids too!

A little bit of this…a little bit of that… I A little bit of this…a little bit of that…

I sound like my grandma (lol).

I’ve been using this OTC diaper rash remedy for patients since I started in practice - and it’s easy peasy!!

The important ingredient is the antacid medication - that’s what blocks the acidic 💩 from irritating the delicate skin around the bottom.

Next you need a vehicle…something to help the liquid antacid stick. I like @aquaphorus or some sort of Zinc Oxide containing diaper cream.

Mix them up so that you have a thin(ish) paste and apply liberally every diaper change.

If your doctor thinks there may be a yeast infection, you can always add a little clotrimazole (aka Lotrimin) as well.

As always CHECK WITH YOUR PEDIATRICIAN and follow their advice - because I’m not your pediatrician and this isn’t medical advice 😘.

Another trick that can help most diaper rashes is leaving baby’s booty exposed to air as much as possible (think naked time in the tub without water - in case they pee/poop). Exposure to air helps the skin heal.

What are your favorite tricks to help heal diaper rash 👇

10 days! My baby is going to college in 10 days 😩😩😩

For the next 10 days I’m going to share the things I really want for her to know before she heads out the door.

Today’s lesson:

TRY SOMETHING NEW (and maybe outside of your comfort zone)

College is the PERFECT opportunity to explore new hobbies, new sports, new clubs, new places, etc.! How amazing for these kids to have all of this knowledge and opportunity at their fingertips! Take advantage of these next few years!!

What wisdom would you impart to a budding college Freshman 👇👇👇

I don’t have a ton of hard and fast NO’s when I don’t have a ton of hard and fast NO’s when it comes to parenting - but these are a few things I will say NO to every time:

🍼Bottles in bed - this can lead to increased risk of ear infections and cavities, not to mention horrible sleep habits. I know it’s easier and faster to hand your kid a bottle and put them down but PLEASE don’t do this!

🛞 Walkers with wheels - I’ve seen one too many head injuries from kids taking tumbles down stairs or even just flipping the walker after it got caught on something. Not to mention they actually DON’T help kids learn to walk. Stationary saucers/jumpers are fine. Just say no to the wheeled variety!

🍇Whole grapes (or hot dogs) for kids under age 4 - this one is at the top of EVERY Pediatrician’s list that I know! Grapes/hot dogs are a HUGE choking hazard for little ones (they’re the perfect size to fit right into their airway and they’re slippery and hard to extract). So please cut those grapes and hot dogs!!

🚴Bikes (or any toy with wheels) without helmets - once again, I’ve seen WAY too many head injuries from kids falling off their bike/scooter/skateboard/hoverboard/roller skates, etc. It’s important to start with helmets AS SOON as kids are on bikes (yes, even a preschooler needs a helmet). In the beginning head injuries may not be as likely BUT you are teaching them a rule that they must wear their helmet when they’re on their bike so that when they’re 10 and riding up and down the street, you don’t have to fight them to put it on.

💊 Medicines within reach of young kids - did you know that medicines are the leading cause of child poisonings?!?! Keep all medicines (including things like Tylenol and vitamins) out of reach of little hands. Don’t forget things like purses/backpacks that may have medicine in them (esp. when grandparents come to visit). And keep the # for poison control in your phone 1-800-222-1222

So those are a few of my absolute NO’s as a Pediatrician and parent. What else would you add 👇👇👇

As I prepare to send my baby to college I’m SO G As I prepare to send my baby to college I’m SO GRATEFUL that my friend @jillgrimesmd wrote this AWESOME book for her (OK she didn’t write it FOR her…but I’m so glad she will have it with her when doctor mom can’t be there).

This book has basically every medical question answered for our college kids - from what to do if you have pink eye to recognizing signs of alcohol poisoning (and what to do if a friend is exhibiting these signs) and EVERYTHING in between.

If you have a kid heading off to college or if YOU ARE a kid heading off to college, check out this book!!

P.S. This is not sponsored - I just really like this book and think every kiddo going to college should have a copy 😘

I asked my followers what was the best advice they I asked my followers what was the best advice they got as a new parent - above are a few of their answers.

Let’s face it - parenting is hard.

We ALL screw up sometimes (yes, even those of us that are in the business of taking care of kids for a living STILL screw up). It’s OK!

My best piece of advice is to understand that babies don’t read the books, or blogs, or Insta posts & there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to parenting (and anyone who tells you there is is either lying or trying to sell you something).

Trust your instincts (people were raising kids WELL before there were a million books about sleep training, discipline, and feeding). Lean in to those around you with parenting experience (who have raised decent kids 😜) and find out what worked for them and what didn’t. And then figure out what works for YOUR family.

And of course, ask your Pediatrician a million questions - that’s what we’re here for!!!
